TV tells us that New York is where young women come to find themselves, whether its the ladies of Sex and the City, That Girl’s Ann Marie, Felicity’s Felicity Porter, Broad City’s Abbi Abrams and Ilana Wexler, or or the girls of Girls. According to creator and star Lena Dunham, who was 26 years old when Girls premiered, the show was intended for woman to old for Gossip Girl and too young for Sex and the City, and if there’s any doubt about the debt owed, think back to the first episode when Shoshanna tells Jessa, “You’re definitely a Carrie with, like, some Samantha aspects and Charlotte hair. That’s, like, a really good combination. I think I’m definitely a Carrie at heart, but sometimes… sometimes Samantha kind of comes out, and then when I’m at school, I definitely try to put on my Miranda hat.”
